A primered repair can look flat under shop lights and still show sanding scratches, ripples, or edge mapping once color and clear are on it. That is why asking what grit for primer sanding is not a one-number question. The correct abrasive depends on whether you are leveling high-build primer, refining a repaired area, or preparing the panel for basecoat.

For most automotive work, start coarse enough to straighten the primer, then move through finer grits until the surface matches the paint system's requirements. Skipping too far ahead leaves texture behind. Staying too coarse too long creates scratches that may show through the finish.

What Grit for Primer Sanding at Each Stage

A 2K high-build primer surfacer is designed to fill minor sanding marks and help you straighten bodywork. It needs a different approach than epoxy primer or a thin sealer coat. Always check the technical data sheet for the specific primer and paint system, but these grit ranges are dependable starting points for restoration work.

For a panel that has already been blocked straight, 320 followed by 400 or 600 is usually the efficient path. If the primer has noticeable orange peel, guide-coat low spots, or a repair edge that still needs work, begin at 180 or 220. Do not start with 400 grit just because it feels safer. Fine paper will polish the tops of the texture before it cuts the low areas, making the panel look better than it actually is.

Start With the Primer You Are Using

High-build primer is where 180, 220, and 320 grit do most of their work. After the primer has cured according to its product instructions, apply a light guide coat and block-sand with 180 or 220 grit. The guide coat tells the truth: dark specks left behind are low areas, while fast-cutting high spots need more attention.

Once the panel is straight and the guide coat sands away evenly, move to 320 grit. This removes the deeper scratches from the first pass and leaves a surface that is much easier to finish. For solid-color jobs, many paint systems accept 400 grit as the final dry-sanding step. Metallics, pearls, and high-visibility panels often benefit from a finer 600-grit finish, particularly when the paint manufacturer specifies it.

Epoxy primer

Epoxy primer is commonly used over properly prepared bare metal, repairs, and corrosion-protected areas. Some epoxy products are intended to be topcoated within a stated recoat window and may not need sanding at all. If that window has passed, or the product instructions require sanding, 320 to 400 grit is often appropriate before additional primer or topcoat.

Do not treat epoxy like a heavy-build surfacer unless its technical data sheet says it can be used that way. Sanding aggressively with 180 grit can cut through thin epoxy on body lines and edges, reducing the protection you put it there to provide.

Primer sealer

Sealer is not normally block-sanded to correct bodywork. Its job is to create a uniform foundation before color, not to replace primer surfacer. If a sealer needs sanding because of dust, a missed recoat window, or a minor defect, use the grit stated by its manufacturer. That is commonly in the 600- to 800-grit range.

If you find yourself trying to level runs, waves, or coarse scratches in sealer, stop and return to primer surfacer. Sealer should go over a panel that is already straight.

Dry Sanding vs. Wet Sanding Primer

Dry sanding is the preferred method for most primer blocking. It keeps the dust visible, works well with guide coat, and makes it easier to see whether the panel is being leveled evenly. Use a proper sanding block on broad, flat areas. Your hand will follow a low spot; a block bridges it and cuts the surrounding high area until the panel is straight.

A dual-action sander can speed up initial refinement, especially on large panels, but it is not a substitute for blocking. Use a soft interface pad where contours require it, keep the machine moving, and avoid dwelling near edges. A DA can quickly create shallow waves that become obvious under glossy paint.

Wet sanding is useful for the final refinement stage when the product system allows it. Water helps keep fine paper from loading and can leave a very uniform finish with 600 or 800 grit. The trade-off is cleanup and moisture control. Keep water away from exposed metal, seams, filler edges, and areas where it can sit behind trim or inside a panel. Blow the repair dry thoroughly before paint.

Use a Guide Coat Every Time You Block

Guide coat is one of the least expensive ways to avoid repainting a panel. A light dusting over cured primer reveals highs and lows as you sand. If the guide coat remains in small isolated dots after a few passes, those are low spots. If it remains across a broad area, the panel is not yet flat enough for finer grit.

Do not bury a low spot by continuing with 400 or 600 grit. Fine abrasives refine scratches, but they do not correct shape. Reapply high-build primer if needed, allow it to cure, then return to 180 or 220 grit on a block. This takes less time than chasing a bad reflection after the color coat is sprayed.

Avoid Common Primer Sanding Mistakes

The most common mistake is using one grit from start to finish. A panel sanded entirely with 220 grit may look smooth but can retain scratches that telegraph through certain colors. A panel sanded entirely with 600 grit may have a smooth surface but still be wavy because it was never leveled.

Another problem is sanding through edges. Primer is thinner on body lines, door edges, wheel arches, and panel corners. Reduce pressure in those areas, use the block with control, and feather your strokes off the edge. If you break through to bare metal, spot-prime the area instead of hoping the color coat will protect it.

Paper condition also matters. Loaded abrasives stop cutting cleanly and generate heat, which can smear primer or leave inconsistent scratches. Change discs and sheets when cutting slows down. It is cheaper than using extra primer, color, and clear to correct a preventable defect.

Finally, respect cure times. Primer that is sanded too soon may clog paper, roll at the edge, or shrink later. Primer that sits too long without being scuffed can create adhesion issues. Your paint system's technical instructions set the real schedule, not the calendar on the shop wall.

A Practical Grit Progression for Most Repairs

For a typical dent repair finished in high-build primer, block with 180 or 220 grit using guide coat until the repair is level. Refine with 320 grit, then finish with 400 grit for many solid-color systems or 600 grit when the basecoat manufacturer calls for it. On large, flat restoration panels, take the time to use long blocks and crosshatch strokes. Straight panels come from controlled sanding, not from adding more paint.

For smaller spot repairs, the same principle applies with less aggressive blocking. Avoid making the sanded area unnecessarily large, but do feather the transition smoothly so the repair disappears under primer, sealer if required, and color.
