Some detailers prefer 4000K for general garage work because it is slightly warmer and more comfortable during long sessions. That is a reasonable choice for fabrication, mechanical work, or a multipurpose shop. For paint correction and final wipe-downs, though, 5000K usually makes defects more obvious.

CRI measures how accurately a light renders color. Look for fixtures rated at 90 CRI or higher whenever paint appearance is the priority. A lower-CRI shop light may be plenty bright, but it can flatten subtle color differences and make residue harder to judge. High-CRI lighting is especially worthwhile when you are matching touch-up work, evaluating a fresh repaint, or checking the appearance of a coating on darker colors.

Keep your permanent fixtures within a close range, ideally all 5000K or all 4000K, then use the inspection light as a deliberate secondary source.

Diffused fixtures reduce glare while still providing a clear reflected line. For inspection work, a controlled source is generally more useful than a painfully bright one.
